Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-05-25
GermanRat has no server, collects no analytics, and never sends your data to us.
Who is responsible
GermanRat is operated by an individual freelancer based in Germany. Contact details are in the Imprint.
What GermanRat stores on your device
The following is stored locally in your browser (chrome.storage.local) and never transmitted to us:
- your OpenAI and/or OpenRouter API key
- your settings (voice, activation mode, provider, and similar preferences)
- words and phrases you choose to save, including their translation, pronunciation, examples, and the date you saved them
This data stays on your device. You can delete it any time by clearing your saved words, removing your key in Settings, or removing the extension.
What GermanRat sends to third parties
When you translate text, request examples, or use AI pronunciation, GermanRat sends the selected text and your API key directly from your browser to the AI provider you configured:
- OpenAI (
api.openai.com) when OpenAI is selected. See OpenAI's privacy policy. - OpenRouter (
openrouter.ai) when OpenRouter is selected. See OpenRouter's privacy policy.
These requests go straight from your browser to the provider and do not pass through any GermanRat server. Your API key is used only to authenticate them. If you use system (browser-native) pronunciation instead of AI voice, no text leaves your device.
What GermanRat does not do
- No analytics or tracking
- No advertising
- No selling or sharing of personal data
- No GermanRat-operated servers receive your browsing, selected text, or saved words
- No automatic capture of pages or selected text; words are stored only when you explicitly save them
Children
GermanRat is not directed at children under 16.
